Uranus' moons are named for characters in William Shakespeare's plays with destinations such as Ophelia and Puck in orbit. Newer moons discovered at Saturn, for example, are named for Norse mythology such as Bergelmir, a giant. Most moons in our solar system are named for mythological characters from a wide variety of cultures. The most significant moons get an official name. For example, S/2009 S1 was the first satellite discovered at Saturn in 2009. How Moons Get Their NamesĮvery moon discovered in the modern era gets a number first. As these planets grew in the early solar system, they were able to capture smaller objects with their large gravitational fields. In the outer solar system, the gas giants Jupiter and Saturn and the ice giants Uranus and Neptune have dozens of moons.

Of the terrestrial (rocky) planets of the inner solar system, neither Mercury nor Venus have any moons at all, Earth has one and Mars has its two small moons. There are hundreds of moons in our solar system – even asteroids have been found to have small companion moons. Most planetary moons probably formed out the discs of gas and dust circulating around planets in the early solar system. They are generally solid bodies, and few have atmospheres. We seek to retell the story of our beginnings.Moons – also called natural satellites – come in many shapes, sizes and types. Our open community is dedicated to digging into the origins of our species on planet earth, and question wherever the discoveries might take us. We’re the only Pop Archaeology site combining scientific research with out-of-the-box perspectives.īy bringing together top experts and authors, this archaeology website explores lost civilizations, examines sacred writings, tours ancient places, investigates ancient discoveries and questions mysterious happenings. The goal of Ancient Origins is to highlight recent archaeological discoveries, peer-reviewed academic research and evidence, as well as offering alternative viewpoints and explanations of science, archaeology, mythology, religion and history around the globe. And while some people may seem content with the story as it stands, our view is that there exist countless mysteries, scientific anomalies and surprising artifacts that have yet to be discovered and explained. This is the effect of icy salty water coming out from the south pole of the Moon, an effect that has been studied and was first observed in 2005.Īt Ancient Origins, we believe that one of the most important fields of knowledge we can pursue as human beings is our beginnings. In recent images taken by Cassin, Enceladus looks as if it has rockets to thrust it. The Cassini spacecraft has done an incredible job of getting high quality pictures since 2005, with multiple fly-bys close to the moon and more to come until 2017.

There is a possibility that Enceladus could have liquid water, as many scientists suggest. It was in 1980 that Voygaer passed at a distance of 200,000 km from Enceladus and we got the first low quality pictures of it. It a sphere of about 500 km in size and the surface is icy. The moon was first observed in 1789 by a British astronomer and because of its volcanic behaviour it was given the name of Enceladus. Enceladus is connected to earthquakes and according to the mythology he was buried under Mount Etna in Italy. Enceladus is one of the moons of Saturn, bearing the Greek Mythology name of one of the Giants, child of Earth and Uranus, with serpent like lower part of the body.
